CNC Cutting Acrylic Guide for Signage in Saudi Arabia

Rio Acrylic | Fabrication Best Practices

CNC routing is the most common method for precision cutting of acrylic sheets in Saudi Arabia's signage industry. It enables clean, accurate cuts for channel letter face panels, custom shapes, display components, and any application requiring precise edge quality. This guide covers the key variables for successful acrylic CNC cutting.

Why CNC is Preferred for Acrylic Cutting in Signage

Unlike hand cutting or table saws, CNC routing offers:

    • Precise, repeatable cuts for batch production
    • Complex shape cutting — letters, logos, curved forms
    • Clean, smooth edges that require minimal finishing
    • Consistent results across all sheet thicknesses
    • Digital workflow from design file to finished part

    Recommended CNC Settings for Acrylic

    ParameterRecommended Value
Bit TypeSingle-flute O-flute upcut spiral (carbide)
    Spindle Speed18,000 – 24,000 RPM
    Feed Rate2,000 – 4,000 mm/min (varies by thickness)
Depth per Pass3–5mm per pass maximum
CoolingAir blast recommended (no liquid coolant)

Common CNC Acrylic Cutting Problems and Solutions

Problem: Melting and Chipping at Cut Edge

Cause: Feed rate too slow or spindle speed too high — heat builds up and re-welds the cut edge. Solution: Increase feed rate, use a single-flute bit, and add air cooling to evacuate chips.

    Problem: Cracking at Cut Start

Cause: Plunging directly into the sheet. Solution: Use a ramping entry or start outside the material boundary.

    Problem: Sheet Moving During Cut

Cause: Insufficient hold-down. Solution: Use vacuum table or double-sided tape on the spoilboard. Leave tabs on smaller parts to prevent movement.

    Edge Finishing After CNC Cutting

CNC-cut acrylic edges can be finished several ways depending on the application:

    • Scrape and sand: Use a card scraper then wet-sand with 400–800 grit for a smooth, satin edge
    • Flame polish: A propane torch quickly polishes the edge to optical clarity — fast but requires skill
    • Leave as-cut: For internal surfaces of channel letters where the edge is not visible, the CNC finish is usually sufficient
